The Ultimate Power: Top Non-BMW Vehicles with BMW’s B48 Engine
The BMW B48 engine has become a staple in BMW’s modern lineup, appearing in a variety of vehicles such as sedans, coupes, convertibles, SUVs, and plug-in hybrids. With power outputs ranging from modest to over 300 horsepower, it has gained a reputation for reliability and responsiveness to aftermarket modifications. Surprisingly, the B48 engine has seen limited use outside of the BMW family, with Toyota, Morgan, and MINI being some of the few non-BMW applications.
The Toyota GR Supra 2.0 is a prime example of utilizing the B48 engine in a modern sports car. With 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the rear-wheel drive Supra 2.0 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in five seconds. Despite its smaller engine size compared to the six-cylinder Supra, the 2.0-liter model offers a lighter and more approachable driving experience.
On the other hand, the Morgan Plus Four combines the B48 engine with a traditional and timeless design. With 255 horsepower and a weight of only 2,300 pounds, the Plus Four offers a unique driving experience with its rear-wheel drive layout and available manual transmission. Priced at £69,995, it is the most expensive non-BMW vehicle featuring the B48 engine.
MINI has extensively used the B48 engine in their John Cooper Works models, with the MINI John Cooper Works GP being one of the most extreme examples. Producing 301 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, the front-wheel drive hatchback offers a performance-oriented driving experience with limited production numbers. The MINI John Cooper Works Clubman ALL4 and John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 provide a more practical yet still performance-focused alternative.
Despite its versatility and adaptability, the B48 engine has not been widely used by other manufacturers. While most automakers already have their own turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the success of the B48 engine in non-BMW applications suggests that other manufacturers may have missed out on an opportunity. Overall, the B48 engine’s limited but successful career under Toyota, Morgan, and MINI badges highlights its capabilities and potential for future applications beyond the BMW family.
