The Future of Diesel-Powered Commercial Vehicles in Australia

Despite changing regulations and market trends, Volkswagen remains confident in the future of diesel-powered commercial vehicles in Australia. According to Nathan Johnson, brand director for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia, diesel powertrains will continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future.

While emissions regulations are becoming stricter globally, Volkswagen believes that local buyers will still prefer diesel engines. Johnson stated, “I definitely think diesel will be here [going forward].”

Before the introduction of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), there were concerns that Australia might become a dumping ground for older, high-emission engines. However, Volkswagen now sees the NVES as reshaping the new-car market while recognizing the continued demand for diesel vehicles, especially among commercial users and residents in regional areas.

Despite the challenges faced during the ‘Dieselgate’ scandal, Volkswagen has phased out diesel-powered passenger cars while still offering diesel options in their commercial vehicle lineup. Johnson emphasized the importance of diesel in the commercial space, noting that it still makes sense and meets the requirements of many industries and customers.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to introduce more efficient engines, including plug-in hybrids like the Caddy and Multivan, to meet evolving market demands. Johnson added that while the passenger vehicle segment has shifted away from diesel, diesel engines remain crucial in the commercial sector.

In conclusion, Volkswagen is committed to supporting the demand for diesel-powered commercial vehicles in Australia by providing efficient and reliable engine options. The company acknowledges the changing market landscape but believes that diesel will continue to play a significant role in meeting the needs of various industries and customers.
