The Volkswagen Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid: A Closer Look

The Volkswagen Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid models are now open for pre-orders in Germany, with detailed specifications on their new drivetrains available online.

The innovative system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors. One motor functions as a generator, while the other serves as a drive motor, either independently or in conjunction with the petrol engine.

The total system output is reported to be 125kW and 310Nm. The 1.5-litre turbo engine generates 110kW and 250Nm between 1750rpm and 4000rpm, while the electric drive motor can deliver up to 125kW. Additionally, a 1.6kWh NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) lithium-ion battery is situated under the boot floor.

The Golf Hybrid boasts a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 180km/h. On the other hand, the T-Roc Hybrid shares the same top speed but takes 8.5 seconds to reach 100km/h.

In terms of fuel consumption, the Golf Hybrid achieves a combined WLTP fuel economy rating ranging from 4.6L/100km to 5.1L/100km. The T-Roc Hybrid, under the same testing conditions, consumes between 5.1L/100km and 5.5L/100km.

Comparatively, the new Golf and T-Roc hybrids exhibit superior efficiency to their mild-hybrid counterparts. The Golf mild-hybrid drivetrain featuring the 1.5-litre turbo engine delivers a WLTP fuel economy of 5.2-5.8L/100km, while the T-Roc variant is rated at 5.6-5.9L/100km.

According to Volkswagen’s official website, the hybrid system incorporates a single-speed transmission.

The driving experience with the hybrid system is expected to be akin to the e-CVT setup found in various Toyota and Lexus models. The drivetrain seamlessly transitions between three drive modes: electric, series (where the petrol engine functions as a generator), and parallel (where the petrol engine drives the wheels with electric motor assistance).

In Germany, the hybrid drivetrains are exclusively offered in the higher-end Style and R-Line trims, with prices starting at €41,400 (A$67,000) for the Golf R-Line Hybrid and €44,470 (A$71,900) for the T-Roc Style Hybrid.

While Volkswagen Australia has not confirmed the availability of the Golf Hybrid or T-Roc Hybrid in the Australian market, the company’s focus on plug-in hybrids for their EV-only range advantage suggests a potential direction.

Interestingly, the second-generation T-Roc is slated to arrive in Australia in 2027, initially featuring mild-hybrid drivetrains exclusively.
