2027 Lexus RX spied: Subtle exterior changes could come with major interior update

The latest version of the Lexus RX large crossover SUV is currently undergoing testing, with spy shots revealing potential updates to the interior while exterior changes may be minimal.

Images captured show what is believed to be the flagship RX500h F Sport Performance model, with no noticeable alterations to the rear of the vehicle. However, the front end features undisguised headlights but camouflaged bumper and grille, hinting at possible modifications in this area.

It is speculated that this could be an early prototype, and further adjustments may be made to the exterior before the updated RX is officially unveiled. While the exact reveal date is uncertain, it is possible that it could happen later this year.

Although the spy photos do not provide a clear view of the interior, it is anticipated that the revamped RX cabin will draw inspiration from recent Lexus models such as the new ES sedan and TZ electric SUV. This could entail a shift to a more symmetrical dashboard layout, replacing traditional buttons with touch-capacitive switchgear.

Both the ES and TZ models showcase an angular digital instrument cluster embedded in the dashboard, along with a freestanding infotainment touchscreen. Below the screen, a row of touch-capacitive switches can be found, including a physical volume dial.

It remains unclear if there will be any mechanical changes to the RX, which shares its platform with the Toyota Kluger. The current lineup in Australia includes hybrid, turbocharged, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, all paired with all-wheel drive except for the RX350h.

The current generation of the RX was introduced in 2022 and made available in Australia in 2023. While the seven-seat RX L variant was not succeeded by a similar model, the larger TX now fills that segment in Lexus’ lineup, although it has not been released in Australia due to its lack of right-hand drive production.

Lexus typically redesigns the RX every five to seven years, but it remains to be seen if the current model’s lifecycle will be extended to align with the industry trend of delaying updates to focus on new technology and electric vehicles. Despite being the second-best seller for Lexus Australia last year, behind the NX mid-size SUV, the RX continues to be a popular choice among customers.
