Ring’s AI-powered Search Party won’t stop at finding lost dogs, leaked email shows

Ring’s Ambitious Plan for AI-Powered Neighborhood Search

Recently leaked internal communication from 404 Media has shed light on Ring’s grand vision for its AI-powered neighborhood search feature. The leaked email, sent by Ring founder Jamie Siminoff to all employees last October, reveals the company’s aspiration to use their Search Party tool to “zero out crime in neighborhoods.”

The announcement sparked concerns about the potential use of AI surveillance on a broader scale. The ad detailed how Ring’s network of cameras could be utilized to search through footage, raising questions about privacy and surveillance.

In response to inquiries from The Verge, Ring clarified that their Search Party tool is currently limited to specific purposes and cannot search for individuals. They emphasized that sharing footage from Ring cameras is at the discretion of the camera owner, except in response to legal requests.

Siminoff’s email, confirmed by Ring to The Verge, was sent following the launch of Search Party. In the email, Siminoff expressed optimism about the tool’s potential impact on reducing crime in neighborhoods.

Siminoff stated, “This is by far the most innovative that we have launched in the history of Ring. I believe that the foundation we created with Search Party…will end up becoming one of the most important pieces of tech and innovation to truly unlock the impact of our mission.”

While Ring already offers AI-powered search tools for camera owners to search their own footage, Search Party allows anyone with access to the Ring Neighbors app to initiate searches. This has raised concerns about potential misuse of the technology.

In response to the leaked email, Ring issued a statement emphasizing their focus on providing camera owners with context about events in their neighborhoods. They highlighted features like Community Requests, which notify neighbors about public safety issues, and reiterated that sharing footage is always the camera owner’s choice.

While Ring aims to empower users with innovative technology, questions remain about the privacy implications of such tools. The company’s ambition to “zero out crime” raises concerns about the potential impact on privacy and surveillance.
