Supabase Faces Disruptions in India as Govt Blocks Website

Supabase, a popular developer database platform, is currently experiencing disruptions in India, one of its key markets, as it has been blocked by the Indian government. The blocking order was issued on February 24 under Section 69A of India’s Information Technology Act, allowing the government to restrict public access to online content.

The reason for the blocking was not publicly disclosed, leaving users uncertain about the cause. It remains unclear whether the action is related to a cybersecurity issue, copyright complaint, or another concern. The duration of the restrictions is also unknown.

Supabase has acknowledged the access issues in India through social media posts. Despite initially reporting the restrictions on Reliance Industries’ JioFiber network, users across various internet providers and telecom networks have since reported similar problems. The company reached out to India’s IT minister for intervention but later confirmed that access remained blocked for many users.

While Supabase suggested workarounds like changing DNS settings or using a VPN to bypass restrictions, these solutions were deemed impractical for most users.

Presently, access to Supabase’s main website is unaffected in India, but its underlying developer infrastructure remains inaccessible.

Impact on Supabase’s Traffic and Developer Ecosystem

India accounts for approximately 9% of Supabase’s global traffic, making it the platform’s fourth-largest traffic source. The recent blocking incident could have significant implications for India’s developer ecosystem. In January, Supabase witnessed a substantial increase in global traffic, with visits from India rising by 179%.

Raman Jit Singh Chima, Asia Pacific policy director at Access Now, highlighted concerns about India’s website blocking practices, emphasizing the uncertainty faced by developers operating in the country.

Previous Instances of Website Blocking in India

India has faced criticism in the past for implementing broad website blocking measures. In 2014, access to platforms like GitHub, Vimeo, Pastebin, and Weebly was briefly restricted during a security investigation. Users also reported instances of GitHub content domain blocks by certain ISPs in 2023.

About Supabase and Recent Developments

Founded in 2020, Supabase offers an open-source alternative to Firebase built on PostgreSQL. The platform has gained popularity in the tech community, focusing on “vibe coding” tools and AI-driven app development. Since September 2024, Supabase has raised approximately $380 million across three funding rounds, reaching a valuation of $5 billion.

Despite the impact of the blockage, Supabase continues to follow up on the issue through various channels to restore access for affected users.

Response from Authorities and Telecom Providers

Requests for comments from India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT and major telecom providers like ACT Fibernet, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio went unanswered. The founders of Supabase, Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson, also did not respond to inquiries.

Conclusion

The blocking of Supabase in India underscores the challenges faced by developers operating in a climate of uncertain website restrictions. The incident raises questions about the freedom of online access and the potential repercussions for the developer community in the country.
