FBI Investigating Breach Affecting Surveillance and Wiretap Warrants Management Systems

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States has confirmed its ongoing investigation into a breach that has impacted systems responsible for managing surveillance and wiretap warrants. This development was disclosed on Thursday.

While specific details regarding the extent and consequences of the incident have not been publicly shared by the federal law enforcement agency, it has assured that the matter has been promptly dealt with.

“The FBI has identified and responded to suspicious activities within FBI networks, utilizing all available technical resources to address the situation,” stated the law enforcement agency in a statement to BleepingComputer, refraining from divulging further information at this time.

A report by CNN, the first to break the news, cited an anonymous source indicating that the breach targeted FBI systems utilized for the management of wiretapping and foreign intelligence surveillance warrants.

While it remains uncertain if this recent incident is linked to previous occurrences, it is noteworthy that Chinese hackers affiliated with a state-backed threat group known as Salt Typhoon compromised U.S. federal government systems dedicated to court-authorized network wiretapping requests in 2024.

News of this breach emerged subsequent to Salt Typhoon infiltrating the networks of major U.S. telecommunications providers, including AT&T, Verizon, Lumen, Charter Communications, Consolidated Communications, Comcast, Digital Realty, and Windstream, as well as numerous international counterparts.

During their intrusion into the U.S. telecom firms’ networks, the hackers managed to access the “private communications” of certain U.S. government officials.

Furthermore, in November 2021, the FBI’s email servers fell victim to a hacking incident where spam emails impersonating the bureau were distributed, cautioning recipients about fictitious cyberattacks.

In a separate incident disclosed in February 2023, the FBI acknowledged an ongoing investigation into malicious cyber activity targeting a computer system within the FBI New York Field Office, utilized for investigations related to child sexual exploitation.

Update March 06, 07:39 EST: The FBI has issued an additional statement regarding the investigation.
