Microsoft Developer Division Head Julia Liuson Resigns After 34 Years

In a significant move, Microsoft is bidding farewell to one of its long-serving executives, Julia Liuson, who has been at the software giant for 34 years. Liuson, who has led Microsoft’s developer division for the past 12 years, will be stepping down from her role. This decision comes at a time when Microsoft has been increasingly focusing on open-source projects and made a notable acquisition of GitHub for $7.5 billion.

Liuson will continue to serve as the head of the developer division until the end of June, after which she will transition to an advisory role reporting to Microsoft CoreAI chief Jay Parikh. The internal memo, as seen by The Verge, mentions that the succession plan for Liuson’s role is not immediately clear, raising questions about the future leadership of the developer business within Microsoft.

In her memo, Liuson expressed her thoughts on the decision, stating, “I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and in January I shared with Satya [Nadella] and Jay [Parikh] that the timing feels right for me to take this step. I am proud of how DevDiv is recognized as one of the most customer-obsessed teams, and we are known for delivering product truth where customers choose to use our product.”

Liuson’s departure adds to a series of executive exits from Microsoft in recent times. This includes the resignation of former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke, whose position was not filled by Microsoft. The rest of GitHub’s leadership team now reports directly to the CoreAI team at Microsoft, with Liuson taking on additional responsibilities post-Dohmke’s departure.

The trend of executive departures continued with the retirement announcements of former Xbox chief Phil Spencer, former Xbox president Sarah Bond, and Microsoft’s head of experiences and devices, Rajesh Jha. Jha’s retirement prompted a restructuring of Microsoft’s upper management, allowing division leaders to report directly to CEO Satya Nadella.

Microsoft’s ongoing organizational changes also include the appointment of a new Copilot boss and a shift in focus for Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman towards the company’s AI models. These developments underscore a period of transition and evolution within Microsoft’s leadership structure.
