Volkswagen continues EV reset, with ID.3 and ID.4 being replaced with “true Volkswagens”

Volkswagen Brand CEO Announces Major Changes for ID.3 and ID.4 EVs

Volkswagen brand CEO, Thomas Schäfer, has revealed plans to replace the current ID.3 and ID.4 electric vehicles with new models that embody the essence of the Volkswagen brand. This decision comes after acknowledging design and usability issues with the existing models.

Schäfer made these statements during a preview event for the updated ID.3 Neo, which will be followed by a revised version of the ID.4. He expressed the need for a brand rebuild to recapture the core values and essence of Volkswagen that had been lost during the EV push.

Speaking to Auto Express, Schäfer emphasized the importance of realigning the brand’s vision and reconnecting with customers, fans, and internal teams to regain the unique Volkswagen identity.

Since taking on the role of CEO in 2022, Schäfer, who previously worked at Skoda, has initiated a reset of the brand’s direction and focus.

The shift in strategy follows criticism of the current EV models for their design, usability, and lack of the traditional Volkswagen charm. Schäfer aims to create a new lineup of vehicles that embody the spirit of the brand.

Schäfer expressed his satisfaction with the progress made in reshaping the brand’s direction and product lineup, emphasizing the commitment to creating vehicles that embody the true essence of Volkswagen.

Despite Volkswagen’s success in EV sales in Europe, global sales decline prompted significant restructuring within the Volkswagen Group, including layoffs and plant closures.

The strategic shift includes a focus on internal combustion engine (ICE) models alongside electric vehicles, with a renewed emphasis on iconic model names like Polo and Golf for future electric offerings.

Volkswagen’s decision to incorporate petrol versions alongside electric variants reflects a more balanced approach to meet consumer preferences and regulatory changes.
