Nissan R36 GT-R: The Ultimate Challenger to BMW’s M3, M4, and M5?
In the past, before the BMW M3 and M4 offered an all-wheel drive option, the Nissan GT-R demonstrated the performance benefits of four-wheel drive. The debut of the R35 GT-R in 2007 marked the first significant introduction of Japan’s iconic all-wheel drive sports car to American audiences. With a Nürburgring lap time faster than the contemporary Porsche 911 Turbo and a lower price tag, Nissan showcased the global appeal of the GT-R.
Over the course of nearly 20 years, the R35 GT-R underwent incremental changes and improvements, culminating in the final car rolling off production lines in August 2025. Despite remaining powerful and expensive, Nissan has not confirmed whether a new generation of the GT-R is in the works. However, Nissan’s President and CEO Ivan Espinosa recently hinted at the development of a new GT-R to “The Drive.”
When the GT-R first debuted in 2007, it offered a competitive alternative to BMW’s M cars in terms of performance and price. However, as the years passed, the GT-R’s price increased significantly, putting it in a higher price bracket than some BMW M models. With BMW’s lineup now including xDrive options and powerful engines, the tables have turned, with BMW models offering quicker performance at a lower cost than the GT-R.
Looking ahead, Nissan’s next GT-R, the R36, is expected to bring new technological advancements and performance capabilities. While details are scarce, early reports suggest a hybrid powertrain and an all-new design. Nissan aims to compete with BMW M cars, which are expected to evolve with the introduction of EV and hybrid models in the coming years.
In order to stay competitive in the market, Nissan will need to innovate and deliver a GT-R that can rival the performance and technology of BMW’s M cars. With the automotive landscape evolving towards electrification and hybridization, Nissan faces a challenge in keeping up with the advancements in the industry. The future of the GT-R remains uncertain, but Nissan is determined to create a new generation that can compete with the best in the market.
