OpenClaw’s Next Mission: Revolutionizing Personal Assistance
The Rise of OpenClaw: Microsoft’s Next-Generation Virtual Assistant
In the realm of personal assistants, names like Bob, Clippy, Cortana, and Copilot have long been associated with Microsoft’s quest to crack the code. Now, a dedicated team within the tech giant is venturing into uncharted territory with OpenClaw – an open-source framework that doubles as both a virtual assistant and a platform for creating and managing proactive agents.
Under the leadership of Corporate Vice President Omar Shahine, this team has not only developed a functioning agent prototype but has also garnered over 3,000 daily users within Microsoft testing “Project Lobster” – the team’s innovative desktop environment based on OpenClaw.
Despite initial skepticism from CEO Satya Nadella, who likened OpenClaw to a security risk akin to a virus, the technology has gained traction not only within Microsoft but also with other industry players like OpenAI and NVIDIA.

Shahine’s vision for the team is ambitious – to create an “always-on” agent ensemble within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, comprising a Chief of Staff agent, an Executive Assistant agent, and a range of specialist agents. These agents would work tirelessly on behalf of users, anticipating needs, managing tasks, and streamlining workflows.
OpenClaw, initially known as Clawdbot and developed by Peter Steinberger (now with OpenAI), made its public debut in November 2025. Shahine’s personal experimentation with OpenClaw earlier this year led to the realization of its potential in automating daily tasks, from drafting emails to researching event tickets.
As the team, dubbed Ocean 11, continues to refine the OpenClaw-based environment, known as Lobster, the focus is on seamless integration across various applications and data sources within Microsoft 365. The ultimate goal is to create an autonomous assistant that operates proactively, offering suggestions and taking action with user consent.
While OpenClaw’s autonomous nature raises security concerns, Shahine and his team are dedicated to addressing these issues. By designing prototype agents with individual Microsoft 365 identities and robust security measures, they aim to ensure enterprise-grade reliability.
Looking ahead, Shahine envisions OpenClaw as a benchmark for virtual assistant technology, setting the standard for enterprise applications. With ongoing developments like ClawPilot, a desktop environment for Mac and Windows, and collaborations with industry experts like Scott Hanselman, Microsoft is poised to revolutionize the landscape of virtual assistants.
