Microsoft’s Xbox Organization Undergoes Restructuring

Microsoft’s Xbox organization is experiencing a significant transformation under the leadership of Asha Sharma, the new Xbox chief. In recent months, Sharma has been instrumental in implementing key changes within the Xbox team. These changes include focusing on enhancing popular Xbox console features, reducing the price of Game Pass, and realigning Microsoft Gaming under the Xbox umbrella.

As part of this reorganization, several changes are taking place within the Xbox platform team. Some long-standing team members are departing, while others are receiving promotions. New faces with technical expertise are joining the team to bolster its capabilities. Jared Palmer, previously associated with Sharma in Microsoft’s CoreAI division, is stepping into the role of VP of engineering and technical advisor to Sharma. In a memo to Xbox employees, Sharma highlighted Palmer’s focus on tackling complex product and engineering challenges, particularly in the areas of developer tooling, taste, and infrastructure.

Tim Allen, former Microsoft CoreAI VP of design and GitHub’s senior VP of design and research, is also joining Xbox to lead the design efforts. Allen’s appointment marks a significant step towards integrating product design, design engineering, research, and creativity with a strong emphasis on prioritizing the needs of fans.

Additionally, Jonathan McKay, former head of growth at Microsoft’s CoreAI division, is entering the Xbox team to oversee growth, data platform, and analytics. Evan Chaki, a former general manager in CoreAI, will lead a new engineering group within Xbox focused on streamlining processes, simplifying development, and enhancing operational efficiency.

These strategic appointments from Microsoft’s CoreAI team indicate Sharma’s commitment to infusing the Xbox organization with technical expertise and experience in areas such as growth and data management. While the influx of AI talent may raise concerns among Xbox enthusiasts, Sharma has clarified that the focus remains on improving the underlying Xbox software platform.

Sharma’s recent announcement on Xbox’s renewed AI efforts underscores the platform’s commitment to addressing player needs by enhancing real-time graphics, refining discovery mechanisms, and deepening personalization features. This shift signals a stronger emphasis on software platform enhancements rather than a major AI-driven approach.

The leadership changes at Xbox predominantly impact the platform teams previously overseen by Sarah Bond, the former Xbox president. While Bond’s departure was announced earlier in the year, she continues to serve as a special advisor to Sharma during the leadership transition. The decision to appoint an external candidate as Xbox chief reflects Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s strategic vision for the future of Xbox.

As part of the ongoing restructuring, Roanne Sones, corporate vice president of Xbox devices and ecosystem, will be taking a leave of absence after the summer, assuming an advisory role thereafter. Kevin Gammill, corporate vice president of Xbox user experience, is stepping down after a long tenure at Microsoft, providing support during the transition period.

Jason Ronald, vice president of next-gen, is receiving a promotion in light of these changes. Sharma underscores the importance of building an affordable, personalized, and open platform at Xbox by closely engaging with stakeholders and aligning efforts with user needs. The goal is to enhance the platform’s capabilities to deliver an exceptional gaming experience.
