Revolutionizing Healthcare: Moonlight AI’s €2.8 Million Investment in Genomic Insights from Routine Blood and Cytology Imaging
Moonlight AI, a Swiss startup focusing on developing image analysis software for clinical-grade diagnostics, has successfully closed a Seed funding round of €2.8 million ($3.3 million). This funding round was co-led by Lotus One Investment (Singapore), VP Venture Partners (Switzerland), and MEDIN Fund (Tunisia), with additional participation from N&V Capital (Liechtenstein) and existing investor QAI Ventures (Switzerland).
Christian Ruiz, the CEO and co-founder of Moonlight AI, emphasized that their technology allows laboratories to obtain actionable results swiftly from existing slides used in their regular workflows. By eliminating the need for costly hardware or manual processes, Moonlight AI empowers labs to enhance their diagnostic capabilities and provide quicker results to patients.
Established in 2022, Moonlight AI specializes in AI-driven diagnostics with the goal of making genomic information more accessible for precise cancer diagnostics. The company transforms medical images into valuable insights, enabling haematologists and pathologists to make more informed treatment decisions for cancer patients globally.
Moonlight AI addresses the challenges faced by precision oncology in accessing genomic data, particularly due to the high costs and lengthy turnaround times associated with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). The company claims to address this issue by utilizing computer vision to identify genomic biomarkers and intricate disease signatures directly from routine blood and cytology smear imaging.
Moonlight’s AI-based diagnostics software integrates seamlessly with the diagnostic lab’s imaging hardware to enhance and prioritize molecular testing. This results in quicker turnaround times, more automated workflows, and more efficient utilization of diagnostic resources to cater to a larger number of patients.
The primary objective of Moonlight AI’s Seed funding round is to expand its exclusive data library, the first to connect entire slide imaging of cytopathology samples with high-quality genomic data.
Nicole H. Romano, the CTO and co-founder of Moonlight AI, highlighted the company’s collaboration with an international consortium of clinical partners to curate a dataset supporting model robustness across real-world laboratory settings and patient populations.
With the recent funding, Moonlight AI intends to grow its team, further develop diagnostic solutions for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), non-small cell lung cancer, and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and expedite the path to commercialization and regulatory approval.
The funding coincides with Moonlight AI’s transition to a Swiss Stock Corporation (Aktiengesellschaft), positioning the company for international expansion and commercial deployment.
Dr. Stefan Habringer, the Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of Moonlight AI, emphasized the importance of high-quality and diverse clinical data for the success of AI-based diagnostics. The company is inviting additional hospitals and laboratories to join their consortium in shaping the future of diagnostics.
In conclusion, Moonlight AI’s innovative approach to AI-driven diagnostics, combined with their recent funding and strategic developments, positions them as a key player in the field of clinical-grade diagnostics, with a focus on improving cancer diagnosis and treatment outcomes globally.
