The Impact of Isekai Genre on Kadokawa’s Financial Results

The recent financial results of Kadokawa have sparked discussions within the anime community, particularly regarding the impact of the isekai genre on the publisher’s profitability.

Rifujin na Magonote, the renowned creator of Mushoku Tensei, shared his insights on Kadokawa’s concerns, attributing the reduced profitability to an overreliance on the isekai genre and a specific style of writing popularized on the platform known as “narou.”

Addressing Kadokawa’s mention of “narou-style” works in their financial report, the author highlighted the strategic approach adopted by authors associated with this style, emphasizing their ability to analyze market trends and produce content that appeals to a wide audience.

While the isekai genre has enjoyed immense popularity in recent years, the emergence of narou style writing, originating from platforms like Shousetsuka ni Narou, has posed unique challenges for publishers like Kadokawa. These works often feature self-insertion and power fantasy elements, catering to a specific reader demographic.

Kadokawa, recognized for producing hit anime series such as Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, acknowledged a significant decline in operating profit, partly attributed to their heavy reliance on isekai and narou style content.

Despite uncertainties surrounding the future popularity of web novels and manga adaptations, the allure of isekai and narou style projects remains undeniable, given their potential for seamless transition into anime formats.

Exciting news awaits fans of Mushoku Tensei, as the highly anticipated season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Crunchyroll this summer, starting July 5th. Stay tuned for more updates on this upcoming release!
