Google Samsung Gentle Monster Warby Parker Android XR Smart Glasses

Google made a big announcement at this week’s Google I/O event, unveiling plans for its first “intelligent eyewear” that will be built on the Android XR platform. These smart glasses will be a direct competitor to Apple’s rumored smart glasses project that aims to rival Meta’s Ray-Bans. The search giant is partnering with Samsung for the electronics and Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for the style, similar to how Ray-Ban has partnered with Meta for their smart glasses.

The Google-powered smart glasses will be branded with the names of the fashion partners and will be part of their “full collections” later this year. Google showcased two styles of the upcoming smart glasses, which will be driven by Gemini AI and can be activated by voice or tapping the side of the frame. While Google plans to release two versions of the smart glasses, only the audio glasses will be available this year, with display glasses coming at a later date.

The audio glasses will offer spoken help and feature cameras to capture the world around the wearer, allowing them to ask Gemini for assistance based on what they see. The glasses will also provide turn-by-turn directions, hands-free calling, texting, and translation features. Additionally, wearers can take high-quality photos and videos using the built-in cameras and utilize Gemini’s Nano Banana for fun image transformations.

The Android XR-powered glasses will allow users to use Gemini for various tasks, such as ordering coffee, summoning an Uber, and learning new languages. The audio glasses will provide a convenient alternative to using the Gemini app on a smartphone with earbuds. The display-equipped glasses will show information visually, adding a new dimension to the AI features.

Google’s smart glasses will be compatible with both Android and iOS phones, providing a versatile option for users of both platforms. While Apple is also working on its own smart glasses project, it is not expected to enter the market until 2027. Apple plans to focus on creating a unique, high-end design in-house, similar to its approach with AirPods and Apple Watch.

Overall, Google’s partnership with fashion brands and innovative AI features make its smart glasses a promising competitor in the market, offering users a stylish and functional wearable technology option.
