Senior executive announces retirement after final year in role – GeekWire
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Longest-Serving Executive, Set to Depart After 35 Years
Yusuf Mehdi, a prominent figure at Microsoft for over three decades, has announced his decision to leave the company after a remarkable tenure that began with Windows 3.1 and culminated in the Copilot era. In an interview, Mehdi referred to the upcoming year as his “final season” at Microsoft.
Currently serving as Microsoft’s EVP and consumer chief marketing officer, Mehdi is responsible for product marketing across various key divisions, including Windows, Surface, Copilot, Microsoft 365 consumer, Edge, and Bing search engine. His departure, scheduled for the next fiscal year, aims to ensure a smooth transition of leadership within the company.
Describing the decision as akin to setting a ship date for a product launch, Mehdi emphasized his commitment to working at full capacity until his departure. In an internal email to his team, he expressed a focus on the ongoing mission at hand before reflecting on his legacy at Microsoft.
As he prepares to step down, Mehdi, 59, refrains from labeling his next chapter as retirement. He remains enthusiastic and open to new opportunities, guided by his extensive experience and innovative mindset developed over the years.
Collaborating closely with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Marketing Officer Takeshi Numoto, Mehdi has been instrumental in outlining the transition plan for his departure. While a successor has not been named yet, Mehdi’s strategic priorities for the upcoming year include advancing Windows in the agentic era, integrating Copilot seamlessly into work and personal domains, and expanding the Microsoft 365 consumer business.
Reflecting on his journey, Mehdi notes the poetic significance of his work on Windows, where his career at Microsoft began as an intern in 1991. With a background in economics and an MBA from the University of Washington, Mehdi has played a pivotal role in shaping Microsoft’s consumer products landscape.
Throughout his tenure, Mehdi has been involved in key product launches, including Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Internet Explorer, Bing, Xbox One, and Windows 10. His contributions to Microsoft’s online services, search business, and consumer AI initiatives have left a lasting impact on the company’s trajectory.
As he looks ahead to his final year at Microsoft, Mehdi’s focus remains on driving innovation and growth within the organization. His dedication to positioning Microsoft for future success underscores his unwavering commitment to the company he has served for over three decades.
Mehdi’s legacy at Microsoft will endure beyond his departure, with his influence evident in the products and strategies he has championed throughout his illustrious career. His departure on June 30, 2027, marks the end of an era at Microsoft, but his contributions will continue to shape the company’s future endeavors.
