Google Launches New Feature to Protect Users from AI Impersonation Scams

Google has introduced a new feature in its Phone app designed to safeguard users against AI impersonation scams. This feature aims to combat scammers who attempt to deceive individuals by mimicking the phone numbers of their contacts.

How the Scam Works

Impersonation scams have become a prevalent threat, with the FBI revealing that in 2025, Americans fell victim to scams utilizing AI technology, resulting in losses exceeding $893 million. Scammers typically impersonate a contact’s phone number and utilize AI-generated voices to pose as friends, family members, or authoritative figures.

Google’s Solution

Google’s Phone app will now alert users to suspicious calls that appear to be emanating from a contact’s number. The app will display a notification stating, “Someone may be pretending to call from your contact’s number,” providing users with the option to terminate the call.

How It Works

This feature is automatically activated for Android 12 and later users, initially available on Pixel phones. Both parties must use Google’s Phone app for the feature to function effectively. A “silent confirmation signal” is sent from the contact’s device to verify the authenticity of the call. If a scammer attempts to spoof the contact’s number, this signal will be absent, triggering the app to flag the call as suspicious.

Enhanced Security

Google has integrated this feature with end-to-end encrypted rich communication services (RCS) technology, ensuring a secure communication environment. This technology can be adopted by other applications to enhance security measures against AI-powered scams.
