The Next Evolution: Apple’s Foldable Device Takes Cues from the iPhone X
Apple is gearing up to unveil its highly anticipated foldable iPhone in the next few months, but potential manufacturing challenges could delay its release. Reports indicate that suppliers are facing issues with the device’s hinges, circuit boards, and other details, leading to speculation that the launch may be pushed back to 2026.
Despite these setbacks, industry insiders believe that Apple will likely announce the foldable iPhone on schedule, even if it means adjusting the launch date or causing delays in shipping. This wouldn’t be unprecedented for Apple, as past products like the original iPhone, Apple Watch, and HomePod were all revealed months before they were available for purchase.
The upcoming foldable iPhone, rumored to be called the “iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra,” is expected to follow a similar pattern. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will unveil the device alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the actual release may be delayed until the fourth quarter of 2026.
Kuo suggests that the foldable iPhone could face supply shortages even after it hits the market, with demand remaining high despite a hefty price tag of around $2,300–2,500. Pre-orders may sell out quickly, leading to extended delivery lead times well into December.
The challenges in manufacturing the foldable iPhone mirror those faced by the iPhone X in 2017, which introduced new technologies like OLED displays and the TrueDepth camera system. Kuo believes that production of the foldable device may be limited initially, with only 7–8 million units expected to ship in 2026.
While some units may be available by the end of September, the bulk of shipments may not occur until October or November, with full production ramping up in early 2027. By then, analysts will have a clearer picture of the demand for the first-generation foldable iPhone.
It’s important to note that these details have not been confirmed by Apple and should be taken as speculation. As with any rumors in the tech industry, it’s best to approach them with caution.
