BMW iX3 Proves Superior Safety with Five-Star Euro NCAP Crash Test Rating
Exploring the Safety of the 2026 BMW iX3
- The Euro NCAP praises the 2026 BMW iX3 as potentially the safest BMW model ever produced.
- The crash test showcased the iX3 50 xDrive with the M Sport Package in a left-hand drive configuration.
- Euro NCAP’s safety standards for 2026 have become more stringent, making it challenging for car manufacturers to achieve a full five-star rating.
Euro NCAP has been conducting vehicle crash tests for nearly thirty years with the primary goal of enhancing safety standards. Over time, their assessment criteria have become more rigorous, requiring automakers to meet higher benchmarks to attain a top rating. The introduction of a new framework for 2026 has further raised the bar, with the second-generation iX3 being among the initial models evaluated under the updated guidelines.
The all-new electric iX3 xDrive50 from BMW, weighing 2,285 kilograms (5,038 pounds), achieved a perfect five-star rating in the crash test conducted by Euro NCAP. The assessment involved a left-hand-drive production model equipped with the M Sport Package, and the results were impressive. This model, part of the modern Neue Klasse lineup, scored 73% in the Safe Driving category. Despite the shift towards digital controls, Euro NCAP appreciates the presence of physical controls for essential functions such as headlights, horn, hazard lights, turn signals, and gear selection in the iX3.
The driver monitoring system and speed limit assist features received accolades for their effectiveness during extensive testing across multiple European countries.
Is the iX3 the Safest BMW Yet?
The iX3 excelled in Crash Avoidance, scoring 93% thanks to its advanced autonomous emergency braking system that exceeded Euro NCAP’s requirements. The lane departure avoidance and pedestrian/cyclist protection features also performed admirably.
In terms of Crash Protection, the BMW iX3 achieved an 86% rating, with exceptional results in side-impact evaluations. However, the score was slightly impacted by the 85% rating for driver chest protection in the full-width test. Notably, the two child dummies in the rear received maximum scores. In frontal offset tests, the iX3 provided good to adequate protection for all adult occupants, including a small female dummy in the front passenger seat.
Euro NCAP highlighted the iX3’s outstanding performance in Post Crash Safety, earning a remarkable 95% score. The eCall system functioned flawlessly, and the high-voltage battery was promptly disconnected to reduce fire risk. Additionally, the electrically operated door handles remained fully functional post-crash.
Euro NCAP suggests that the 2026 BMW iX3 could be the safest vehicle in BMW’s lineup to date. Anticipated safety ratings for upcoming models like the i3, i3 Touring, and iX4 are expected to be similarly impressive, given their shared platform.
