Despite a $200 price increase, Apple is struggling to keep up with the demand for its new MacBook Air models.

Apple recently raised prices due to soaring commodity prices, particularly for memory chips. While this move helped cover the increased costs, it hasn’t resolved the supply chain challenges in obtaining these essential components.

According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the MacBook Air is facing significant shortages, driven by the high demand for memory chips, including RAM and flash storage.

This scarcity affecting a mainstream Mac product, especially a newly released one, is unprecedented. The Mac mini and Mac Studio have also been in short supply since April, with some configurations discontinued and others facing shipping delays of up to five months.

Apple has emphasized that the demand for desktop Macs primarily comes from AI server farms. The Mac mini and Mac Studio are seen as ideal platforms for AI and agentic tools, leading to a surge in customer interest. To manage demand and ease supply chain pressures, Apple shifted Mac mini production to Texas and discontinued the 256 GB entry-level model, encouraging AI hyperscalers to opt for the $799 version.

While this strategy benefits Apple financially, it may not alleviate the MacBook Air shortages, which could impact students preparing for the upcoming school year. Apple’s back-to-school promotion now steers customers towards the base MacBook Pro, as the product range eligible for gift card bonuses is limited, excluding desktop Macs like the iMac.

Students purchasing a MacBook Air can receive a $100 gift card, but availability remains a concern. Apple’s marketing materials now include a disclaimer stating, “MacBook Air subject to availability,” leaving many puzzled by this unusual move.

Reports suggest that Apple is prioritizing the 14-inch MacBook Pro to make way for an upcoming M6 MacBook Pro release, likely in October or November. A new MacBook Air isn’t anticipated until early 2027.

Whether due to availability issues or strategic planning, securing a MacBook Air before the school year begins necessitates prompt action, especially for custom configurations.
