Warning: Android Apps at Risk of Shutdown Due to High RAM Usage
Android Memory Management: What You Need to Know
In response to the increasing prices of memory, Google announced a new memory management strategy for Android devices. The decision comes as new devices are either maintaining or reducing their physical memory capacity, leading to what Google refers to as “RAMageddon.”
Developers are now required to optimize and test their apps to ensure they do not exceed the memory limit set by Google. This is crucial as the operating system may forcibly close apps that consume too much memory.
Android 17, the latest version of the operating system, introduces a new feature where data usage can be moved to zRAM, a compressed memory area. This helps prevent the device from slowing down due to heavy memory usage. However, delays may still occur during data decompression.
If the zRAM optimization is unsuccessful, the operating system will automatically close the app to prevent system-wide slowdowns. App developers are advised to closely monitor RAM usage to avoid this scenario.
For Android users, this decision brings several benefits, as background apps can no longer overload the RAM and impact the overall performance of the smartphone. Those with older devices and limited RAM are encouraged to be cautious with the number of apps they have installed.
Currently, the new memory limits only apply to Pixel smartphones running Android 17. However, other manufacturers are expected to implement similar restrictions in the near future. Users can check if their device will receive the Android 17 update to stay informed.
