Mass Layoffs at Heart Machine as Publisher Cancels Unreleased Game
Heart Machine Faces Layoffs Amid Funding Withdrawal
Heart Machine, the renowned US-based game development studio behind titles such as Hyper Light Drifter and Possessor(s), has recently undergone a significant workforce reduction. This unfortunate event was triggered by the sudden withdrawal of funding from an undisclosed publisher for Heart Machine’s upcoming project.
Alx Preston, the founder of Heart Machine, took to LinkedIn to announce the layoffs, revealing that the studio’s future now hangs in the balance. The cancellation of the unannounced game, which was previously backed by a publisher, left the studio with a severe financial setback, resulting in the departure of the majority of its staff. Preston expressed his devastation over the situation, emphasizing the challenging circumstances that the studio now faces.
In his statement, Preston assured the affected employees of support in finding new opportunities and expressed gratitude for their contributions. Despite the uncertainties surrounding Heart Machine’s future, Preston remains determined to navigate the obstacles and sustain the studio’s presence in the industry.
The terminated project would have marked Heart Machine’s fifth title, following the success of their previous releases like Drifter and Solar Ash. However, recent endeavors such as Hyper Light Breaker and Possessor(s) have faced challenges, with the former failing to capture the essence of its predecessor and the latter receiving mixed reviews.
The layoffs at Heart Machine reflect a broader trend in the gaming industry, where job cuts have become increasingly common. Despite the setbacks, Preston’s acknowledgment of the studio’s reliance on its workforce sets a more humane tone amidst the industry’s harsh realities.
