Court Dismisses Antitrust Lawsuits Against Google’s AI Overviews
Federal Judge Dismisses Antitrust Lawsuits Against Google
A recent development in the tech industry sees a federal judge dismissing antitrust lawsuits filed by Chegg and Penske Media Corporation, the parent company of Rolling Stone, against Google. These lawsuits alleged that Google’s AI-powered search features were driving away web traffic. The ruling, reported by Reuters, was made by US District Judge Amit Mehta who sided with Google, stating that the claims made by Chegg and PMC did not align with antitrust law.
Accusations Against Google
Chegg and PMC had accused Google of misusing its monopoly power by pressuring publishers to provide content for AI Overviews for free, under the threat of being excluded from search results. The publishers claimed that Google’s actions diverted traffic from their websites, impacting their revenue negatively.
Court Ruling
Judge Mehta, known for a previous landmark antitrust ruling against Google, disagreed with the claims made by Chegg and PMC. He emphasized that the expectation of receiving search traffic from Google for providing content for free does not constitute an agreement but is a fundamental aspect of how search engines operate.
Addressing Publisher Concerns
While recognizing the challenges faced by publishers in the digital landscape, Judge Mehta highlighted that antitrust regulations cannot replace the need for legislative measures to address the economic implications of innovation.
