X launches Chat, its new encrypted DMs

X has recently unveiled Chat, a new encrypted feature for its direct messaging service that offers enhanced security and additional functionalities. Users can now enjoy video and voice calls, disappearing messages, and easy file sharing within the platform.

The introduction of Chat was officially announced by the company on a recent Friday, and it is already accessible on iOS and web platforms, with an Android version set to launch soon. This new feature replaces the previous messaging system of X, ensuring a seamless transition for users with their old messages being seamlessly transferred.

X emphasizes that Chat incorporates end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for both messages and files, heightening the security of communication. However, it is important to note that message metadata, such as recipient details and timestamps, are not covered by this encryption. In addition, there is currently no safeguard against potential man-in-the-middle attacks, with the company acknowledging the possibility of compromised conversations without user awareness. Nevertheless, measures to verify message authenticity and device identity are in development.

Privacy features of Chat include the option for messages to automatically disappear after a specified time, as well as the ability to receive notifications when a chat is screenshotted or prevent screenshots entirely. Users can edit and delete messages, and the platform supports voice and video calls, with voice notes slated for future release.
