After SEC investigation, Curastory founder resigns, hires replacement

The Securities and Exchange Commission Alleges Curastory of Overstating Revenue

The Securities and Exchange Commission has accused content monetization startup Curastory of overestimating revenue and misrepresenting client numbers to investors, as per documents reviewed by TechCrunch.

Following a settlement with the SEC, founder and CEO Tiffany Kelly has stepped down and appointed Dave Dickman, former CEO of Tagger, as her replacement.

Under Dickman’s leadership, Curastory is embarking on fundraising, international expansion, and product updates, according to Kelly and Dickman.

As part of the settlement agreement, Kelly is barred from serving on boards or as an executive in fundraising-related companies for ten years, without admitting or denying the allegations.

While still a major shareholder and advisor, Kelly expressed that stepping aside was necessary to ensure the company’s success.

Established in 2021, Curastory is a platform aiding content creators in monetizing videos, with approximately 400,000 creators currently using the service.

The company has raised around $3 million from investors such as LightSpeed’s Scout Fund, Feld Ventures, and Mindspring Capital.

Kelly acknowledged the turbulent journey and agreed to pay a fine as part of the settlement, without knowledge of the SEC investigation’s trigger.

Expressing hope for grace and time, Kelly relinquished her role but remains the majority owner, relieved that fundraising responsibilities are now handled by Dickman.

She played a pivotal role in selecting Dickman through an executive recruiter, seeking someone who valued the company’s technology and integrity.

Dickman, reflecting on the resolution, highlighted the complementary qualities he and Kelly bring to the company, aiming to drive it forward successfully.

Already witnessing changes under Dickman’s leadership, Kelly anticipates a bright future for Curastory, with plans for expansion and product enhancements.

The company is set to expand into Canada, Australia, and the UK, targeting creators on various platforms and enhancing advertising technology with AI.

Curastory intends to introduce advanced attribution models for advertisers, eliminating the need for influencer promo codes.

Kelly, despite the unexpected transition, values her experiences as a founder and CEO, aspiring to share her insights with others, particularly women and people of color.
