Revolutionizing iOS Development: Exploit’s Animated App Icons

Exploit lets iOS developers create animated app icons

An interesting discovery has been made regarding iOS app icons. While developers have long been able to provide alternative icons for their apps, a researcher has found a way to create animated and interactive icons, bypassing the usual manual user action.

Animated Icons in iOS Apps

Bryce Bostwick recently uncovered an exploit in iOS that allows developers to implement animated app icons. By utilizing the system’s official API, the exploit enables the automatic changing of app icons without requiring user confirmation.

Normally, iOS prompts the user to select a custom icon within the app, followed by an alert confirming the change. If the system fails to verify the user’s choice or if the alert is not displayed, the icon change is canceled. This exploit circumvents these restrictions by using a private method to call the API and alter the app’s status check, fooling iOS into recognizing the app as active even when running in the background.

This breakthrough enables apps to autonomously change their icons, with Bostwick demonstrating the creation of animated icons by combining multiple frames. While the concept of all icons being animated may be overwhelming, the potential for apps to display brief animations in response to notifications is intriguing.

It is important to note that any apps exploiting this exploit would likely face rejection by the App Store Review team.

iOS 18 Home Screen Redesign

While there have been no rumors of animated icons in iOS, recent reports indicate that Apple is planning a significant overhaul of the iPhone Home Screen with the upcoming iOS 18. The update is expected to introduce new features, such as the ability for users to freely move icons around the screen and select background colors for app icons.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 on June 10 during the WWDC 2024 event.
