Foldable Iphone Concept Design 2019

Rumors suggest that Apple may be gearing up to release a foldable iPhone next year, which could potentially launch without a physical SIM card. Instead, users would need to rely on eSIM technology, regardless of their location.

Apple’s development of a foldable iPhone has been in the works for several years, with more concrete details emerging in 2024. Initially, it was uncertain whether the device would take the form of a clamshell-style “iPhone Flip” or a book-style “iPhone Fold.” Reports indicated that Apple was exploring both options before ultimately deciding on the latter.

By mid-2024, rumors were leaning towards the “iPhone Flip,” but the company eventually shifted towards the “iPhone Fold.” Various sources, including The Information, indicated that Apple had progressed from the conceptual stage to developing a tangible product codenamed V68.

Recent reports from mainstream sources like Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, and display industry analyst Ross Young have provided insights into the design of the new iPhone. It is expected to resemble devices like the Galaxy Z Fold, OnePlus Open, and Pixel Fold.

While specific details about the foldable iPhone’s specifications remain uncertain, sources suggest that it will be approximately 9mm thick when folded and less than 4.8mm when open. This would make it even thinner than Apple’s current thinnest device, the 13-inch M5 iPad Pro. The rumored iPhone Air, which was previously speculated, is believed to have served as an engineering test for achieving the required slimness.

The iPhone Air, known for its ultra-slim design, eliminated the physical SIM card slot in favor of eSIM technology. Apple introduced eSIMs with the iPhone XS and XR models in 2018, gradually phasing out the physical SIM slot. The iPhone Air’s thin profile necessitated the removal of any extraneous elements, including the physical SIM card slot.

Despite initial challenges in markets like China due to regulatory requirements for eSIM-only devices, the iPhone Air paved the way for Apple’s foldable iPhone. With expectations of even greater thinness for the foldable device, it appears unlikely that a physical SIM slot will be included.

The iPhone Fold, anticipated to be a premium device with a high price point, is expected to appeal to users comfortable with eSIM technology. The success of the iPhone Air without a physical SIM card indicates that this feature may not be a significant issue for potential buyers.
