BMW M: The Last Stand for Manual Transmissions

In a world where Mercedes-AMG and Audi Sport have abandoned manual transmissions, BMW M stands firm in its commitment to keeping the clutch pedal alive. However, the battle to preserve manuals is becoming increasingly challenging as advanced driver-assistance systems are more suited for automatic transmissions. The declining interest in performance cars with manual gearboxes only adds to the struggle.

One lesser-known fact about the BMW Z4 is that a manual transmission has been available since 2019. Initially limited to the four-cylinder sDrive20i, an entry-level model not offered in the United States, it wasn’t until a few years ago that American buyers had the option for a manual transmission with the M40i through the Handschalter Package.

While the demand for the six-speed manual transmission remains steady, it has been overshadowed by the eight-speed Steptronic in 2025. BMW USA mentioned that last year, there was an even split in demand between the two gearbox options. In 2024, 65% of buyers opted for manual transmissions. It’s important to note that 2025 marked the final full year of production for the G29 Z4.

The popularity of the M2 with a manual transmission saw a decline from 50% in 2024 to 40% recently. This trend is expected to continue with the rumored automatic-only xDrive variant. The M3 and M4 Competition and xDrive versions are exclusively automatic, leaving only the base models with manual transmission options. Reports suggest that only 6-10% of M3 and M4 buyers chose the manual transmission last year.

Looking ahead, the M2 and M4 are projected to offer manual transmissions until their life cycles end around mid-2029. On the other hand, the Z4 faces an uncertain future, while rumors point to the end of M3 production in early 2027. The upcoming G84 replacement for the M3 is expected to debut in 2028 with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

With manual transmissions seemingly on the brink of extinction, now may be the best time to purchase a BMW with a three-pedal setup. The decision to exclude a manual option for the M240i model may have been a missed opportunity that can no longer be rectified.
