The Decline of Android 17: Why He Will Fade into Obscurity
Despite being around for almost two decades, Android continues to face a significant challenge.
Although the latest iteration, Android 16, is currently accessible on all supported Google Pixel devices and many other top smartphones, its distribution to older handsets remains slow.
Recent distribution data indicates that only 7.5 percent of all Android devices are currently running Android 16, according to a report from 9to5Google. This figure is an improvement from April 2025 when Android 15 was only installed on 4.5 percent of devices. The slow rollout of Samsung’s Android 15 skin, One UI 7, to previous-generation Galaxy phones contributed significantly to this delay.

Despite the progress, Android 16 still lags far behind iOS 26, which is installed on nearly 30 percent of supported devices (per StatCounter). The disparity in adoption rates between the two operating systems is evident and concerning.
It is essential to understand that the slow adoption of Android updates has significant implications for current Android users and future users alike.
Android 17 is on the horizon, but does anyone care?
Personally, I am eagerly anticipating the release of the next major Android version, likely to be named Android 17. My excitement stems from the anticipation of benefiting directly from the new features it will offer.
Who can blame you for not getting excited about what Google reveals in its next glossy keynote?
As a user of Google’s latest Pixel 10 Pro XL, I am positioned to receive Android 17 promptly upon its release, possibly even participating in the beta testing phase.

However, the reality for the majority of Android users is quite different. Owners of Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Honor, and other third-party Android devices may have to wait months or even years to receive Android 17. This disparity in update timelines often leads to a lack of enthusiasm for new Android features among users.
Most individuals are indifferent to upcoming phone features that may not be accessible to them for an extended period. This lack of interest is exacerbated by the fact that many recent Android features, such as Call Screening, Now Playing, Scam Detection, and the Personal Safety app, are exclusive to Pixel phones, which have a relatively small market share.

While software updates increasingly focus on bug fixes and security enhancements, the issue of unsupported devices presents a significant challenge.
The challenge of unsupported phones
Data from 9to5Google highlights the extensive fragmentation within the Android user base, with a significant portion using older versions of the operating system dating back to Android 11.
Although some of these devices may no longer be actively used, there is a substantial risk that millions of users are operating unsupported phones.
Unsupported phones pose security risks as they lack essential security patches to protect against potential threats. In the event of a bug or malware infection, users of unsupported devices are left vulnerable without the prospect of receiving necessary updates.
There’s still a strong chance that millions of people are using unsupported phones
To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to ensure that your device is still supported by the manufacturer. If not, it is advisable to consider upgrading to a device that receives ongoing software support.
While Google progresses with the development of Android 17, many users of older devices are at risk of being left behind. While it may be challenging to ensure the complete safety of all 3.9 billion Android users, prioritizing the security and functionality of devices remains paramount.
Therefore, the lukewarm reception of Android 17 upon its release should not come as a surprise, especially considering that many users have yet to receive Android 16.
