Windows 11 and Windows 10 VSM Shutdown Issue: What You Need to Know

Recently, Microsoft confirmed that an issue impacting the shutdown process on some Windows 11 devices also extends to Windows 10 systems with Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) enabled. This issue has raised concerns among users who rely on VSM for enhanced security on their devices.

VSM is a critical security feature in Windows that establishes a secure, isolated memory region separate from the main operating system. This “secure kernel” utilizes hardware virtualization to safeguard sensitive data and prevent malware attacks, offering protection for credentials, encryption keys, and security tokens.

One of the key benefits of VSM is its ability to support security features like Credential Guard, Device Guard, and Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity in Windows 10/11 Enterprise editions. However, the recent shutdown issue has prompted Microsoft to release emergency updates to address the issue.

Following the discovery of the bug affecting Windows 11 23H2 devices, Microsoft quickly rolled out out-of-band updates to resolve the issue. For users unable to immediately install the updates, a temporary workaround involving the “shutdown /s /t 0” command was recommended.

Subsequently, it was revealed that Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 are also susceptible to the shutdown issue when VSM is enabled post the installation of specific updates. Affected users are advised to utilize the command line workaround until a permanent fix is made available.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue and assured users of a forthcoming solution in a future Windows update. The company emphasized the importance of addressing the shutdown issue on Secure Launch-capable PCs with VSM enabled to ensure smooth operation.
