Alabaster Dawn is the kind of 2.5D action-RPG spectacle that makes you question the need for "true" 3D

Discovering Alabaster Dawn: A Hidden Gem in the World of Action-RPGs

As a dedicated Heroic Videogames Journalist, one of the challenges I face is sifting through numerous new games each week and only being able to spotlight a few. However, every now and then, I choose to break free from the trend and shed light on a game that may have slipped under the radar. Have you had the chance to experience the wonders of the action-RPG Alabaster Dawn? Released in early access on May 7th with a demo still available, this game has already captured the hearts of many in the gaming community.

Developed by Radical Fish Games, the masterminds behind the beloved CrossCode, Alabaster Dawn takes players on a thrilling journey through a visually stunning 2.5D world filled with intricate details and captivating storytelling. Unlike its predecessor, which featured top-down 16-bit graphics, Alabaster Dawn introduces a fresh perspective with layered environments and exquisite sprite art that rivals even the most advanced game engines.

The game’s narrative unfolds in a realm plagued by the curse of Nyx, reminiscent of the menacing Zerg from Starcraft. Players assume the role of Juno, a lone survivor among the Chosen warriors tasked with battling these malevolent creatures. As Juno embarks on her quest to restore peace and rebuild civilization, players are introduced to a combat system inspired by acclaimed titles like Devil May Cry and Kingdom Hearts.

Featuring eight unique weapons that can be dual-wielded, each with its own set of combos and special abilities, Alabaster Dawn offers a diverse and engaging gameplay experience. The fluid combat mechanics combined with stunning character animations and a quirky, self-referential script add depth and charm to the overall gaming experience.

While I may not have the opportunity to provide a full review of this captivating game, it’s worth noting that Alabaster Dawn plans to remain in early access for two years, with the final version promising a complete story spanning seven chapters and an estimated playtime of 40 hours. The current build offers 6-10 hours of gameplay, taking players up to the middle of chapter 2, with additional replay value through a roguelite mode.

Whether you’re drawn to the mesmerizing visuals, engaging combat system, or the promise of a rich and immersive storyline, Alabaster Dawn is sure to leave a lasting impression on any avid gamer.
