Sony Reports Significant Impairment Losses for Bungie in Latest Quarter

Sony has recently revealed a substantial decrease in the value of Bungie, the renowned developer behind titles such as Destiny and Marathon. The company reported significant impairment losses for Bungie, Inc. in the last quarter, ending on March 31st.

During this period, Sony recorded impairment losses amounting to 88.6 billion yen (approximately $565 million USD) against Bungie’s intangible and other assets. This loss adds to the previous quarter’s figures, resulting in a total drop of 120.1 billion yen (around $765 million USD) within the past year.

These latest financial revelations come at a challenging time for Bungie. Player numbers for Destiny 2 have been steadily declining since the release of The Final Shape expansion in 2024. Additionally, the recently launched Marathon has failed to attract a substantial player base, falling short of expectations. The previous impairment loss, reported in November, cited that the sales and user engagement levels of Destiny 2 did not meet Sony’s initial acquisition projections for Bungie.

Instead of traditional revenue and expenditure figures, impairment losses reflect the accounting treatment of Bungie as a valuable asset within Sony’s portfolio. The acquisition of Bungie in July 2022 for $3.6 billion has now seen a significant decrease in valuation. Notably, a portion of the acquisition cost, around $1.2 billion, was allocated for staff retention incentives. This acquisition was perceived as an ambitious move by Sony in response to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision and the industry trend towards live service gaming.

Bungie, like many other game developers, has also experienced workforce reductions through multiple rounds of layoffs. Starting with approximately 1,600 employees at the time of acquisition, the studio has downsized significantly, losing over 750 employees by 2024.

Despite these challenges, there is hope for Bungie’s future. Fans of Destiny 2 may be pleased to hear rumors of a potential Destiny 3 in development, with expectations for a renewed focus and priority on the franchise moving forward.
