Empowering Europe: EuroTPC Project Advances AI in Science
The EuroTPC Project: Advancing Europe’s Influence in Scientific AI
The EuroTPC project, recently launched with support from the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, aims to enhance Europe’s position within the global Trillion Parameter Consortium (TPC), a collaborative initiative focused on advancing open AI for scientific applications.
A Collaborative Effort for Next-Generation AI Models
Commencing on 1 May 2026, the three-year EuroTPC program brings together leading European supercomputing and research organizations to coordinate Europe’s contribution to the development of next-generation AI models.
Headed by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, the EuroTPC project includes partners from Finland, Italy, France, and Germany, such as CSC – IT Center for Science, CINECA, Neovia Innovation, and BADW-LRZ.
Securing nearly €1.5 million in Horizon Europe funding through the HORIZON-JU-EUROHPC-2025-INCO-01 call, the initiative aims to ensure European priorities and standards are well-represented in the evolution of extreme-scale AI systems.
Empowering Europe’s Position in AI Research
The TPC, established in 2023, supports the transparent and collaborative development of massive AI models tailored for scientific use, in contrast to proprietary models developed in isolation.
The EuroTPC project will serve as Europe’s coordination hub within the global TPC, with plans to establish a dedicated European TPC Office to facilitate collaboration, align projects with EU policies, and devise a strategic roadmap for Europe’s engagement.
Enhancing Trustworthy AI for Scientific Endeavors
One of the key focuses of the EuroTPC project is the cultivation of trustworthy and dependable AI for scientific purposes using open and scalable infrastructure.
The consortium intends to support the development of large-scale AI models alongside the necessary data ecosystems, benchmarking systems, and computing resources for effective operation, with potential applications in climate modeling, pharmaceutical research, materials science, and advanced manufacturing.
Fostering Collaboration Across Europe’s HPC Ecosystem
The EuroTPC project will collaborate closely with EuroHPC AI Factories, research centers, private enterprises, and scientific communities across Europe through various activities like technical working groups, hackathons, and workshops to promote knowledge exchange and stakeholder involvement.
With the increased investments in large-scale AI infrastructure by the United States and China, European institutions are striving to maintain technological independence while upholding open research standards.
Over the next three years, the EuroTPC project aims to establish a unified European approach to scientific AI development, positioning Europe as a significant contributor to the future of open, large-scale AI research.
