Lost Treasures: The Untold Story of Uncharted’s PS5 Remake
The Uncharted Remake That Never Was
According to Martin Kemp, a PlayStation 5 remake of the original Uncharted was put on hold in favor of The Last of Us: Part I. Kemp, known as “Thekempy” on YouTube, recently released a detailed analysis of Naughty Dog’s initial plans for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End before director Amy Hennig’s departure. The video provides an intriguing look into the studio’s decision-making process.
Kemp shared this information during an appearance on episode 517 of the Sacred Symbols podcast, hosted by former IGN editor Colin Moriarty. He revealed that Naughty Dog had begun working on a remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune for the PS5 with assistance from PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group.
The team reportedly recreated a portion of Nathan Drake’s first adventure using the graphical fidelity of Uncharted 4. However, the project was eventually scrapped due to the immense undertaking it would require. Naughty Dog shifted its focus to developing The Last of Us: Part I instead.
While some may question this decision, The Last of Us: Part I received critical acclaim for its enhanced graphics and engaging narrative. The game attracted a new wave of fans, particularly after the success of HBO’s television adaptation. Our review praised it as “an impressive remake of a beloved classic, offering subtle yet impactful changes to the emotional storyline.”
Although Drake’s Fortune remains a beloved title, it’s challenging to imagine a remake surpassing the excellence of Uncharted 4 and its spin-off, The Lost Legacy. However, the idea of revisiting the original game to delve deeper into the Uncharted universe is not entirely dismissed.
Speculation suggests that the future of the series may now rest in the hands of Bend Studio, known for their work on Days Gone. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog’s focus has shifted to their upcoming sci-fi adventure game, Intergalactic. While details are scarce, fans are eagerly anticipating more information on this project.
