Ferrari patents electronic H-pattern manual shifter for automatic transmission

Exciting Details About Ferrari’s Upcoming Manual Gearbox Model

Ferrari enthusiasts have something to look forward to as the brand is gearing up to unveil a special model on July 4. This exciting news was recently confirmed by the brand’s CEO at a dealer conference in Las Vegas.

The upcoming model is expected to be a 12Cilindri featuring a unique manual gearbox and is rumored to be named 12Cilindri MM. Recent patent filings have provided additional insights into the innovative shift-by-wire transmission that will be incorporated into this new model.

The patent documents confirm previous reports suggesting that Ferrari is developing a cutting-edge Engage Shift System (ESS) reminiscent of Koenigsegg’s technology.

Ferrari’s designs showcase a traditional H-pattern shifter mechanism combined with an electronic control unit. The system includes classic shifter components along with drive mode selector buttons typically found in automatic transmissions.

Ferrari Manual Gearbox

Unlike conventional automatic gearboxes that allow sequential gear selection, Ferrari’s new system aims to offer more flexibility. The innovative control tower is designed to enable drivers to choose different ratios based on driving conditions, mimicking the functionality of a manual gearbox without physical linkage.

One key detail not disclosed in the patent documents is whether Ferrari’s system will include a third pedal to simulate clutch operation, similar to Koenigsegg’s ESS that features a traditional clutch pedal.
