Revolutionizing the Next Generation: Cutting-Edge Innovations and Upgrades

what’s new in the latest generation

Sennheiser recently unveiled the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless, the latest addition to its premium over-ear headphone series. Introduced on May 26, 2026, this new model enhances its predecessor with targeted enhancements in noise cancellation, codec support, battery technology, and spatial audio capabilities. However, it retains the same 42mm driver unit that was featured in the previous generation.

Driver and Sound Tuning
The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless maintains the 42mm dynamic transducer from the previous model, produced at Sennheiser’s facility in Tullamore, Ireland. Inspired by the HD 600-series open-back headphones, the driver is tuned to deliver full-bodied sound with dynamic bass.

These headphones are Hi-Res Audio certified and support an extended frequency range of 6 Hz to 40 kHz when connected via Bluetooth or USB. When using a wired analogue connection, the range is 6 Hz to 22 kHz. The total harmonic distortion is rated at less than 0.2% at 1 kHz and 100 dB SPL, with a sensitivity of 108 dB SPL.

Codec Support and Wireless Connectivity
One of the key upgrades in this generation is the inclusion of support for Snapdragon Sound technology, enabling compatibility with aptX Lossless codec. The codec lineup includes SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Lossless, and aptX Adaptive. This feature makes the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless one of the few consumer headphones to support aptX Lossless, capable of delivering CD-quality audio over Bluetooth when the source device also supports it.

The headphones come with Bluetooth 5.4 as standard and are engineered for Bluetooth 6.0, which Sennheiser plans to enable through a future firmware update. They support A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, HSP, and GATT profiles.

Active Noise Cancellation
Significant improvements have been made to the ANC system in the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. The microphone count has doubled compared to the previous model, with a total of eight microphones – four per side – used for noise cancellation and transparency mode functions. Sennheiser claims that the system is up to three times more effective at reducing midrange noise, especially voice chatter, compared to the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless.

The implementation, termed Hybrid Adaptive ANC, utilizes MEMS microphones with a pickup frequency range of 20 Hz to 15 kHz. Beamforming technology is employed for call noise reduction. Sennheiser also highlights enhancements to transparency mode, emphasizing a more natural voice quality during calls due to the increased microphone count.

Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos
The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is equipped to support spatial audio with head-tracking. It also features Dolby Atmos compatibility with head-tracking support for Atmos-encoded content. Sennheiser mentions that this functionality will be activated through a day-one firmware update for early adopters, rather than being pre-enabled.

The platform is designed to evolve over time through firmware updates to both the DSP and wireless engines, allowing for the addition or refinement of capabilities post-launch.

Battery Life and User-Replaceable Cell
The headphones offer a battery life of up to 57 hours with ANC active, tested with an iPhone at mid volume. A full charge takes approximately two hours, and a quick ten-minute charge can provide up to seven hours of playback.

A notable addition in this generation is the inclusion of a user-replaceable battery. The 700 mAh lithium-ion cell can be swapped using a standard Phillips-head screwdriver, without the need for specialized tools. Sennheiser assures that this design does not affect acoustic performance and aims to extend the headphones’ usable lifespan.

This feature sets the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless apart in a market where most headphones have sealed, non-replaceable batteries. As battery capacity diminishes over time, the ability to install a new cell should help these headphones remain in regular use longer than their competitors.

App and Equalizer
The headphones are supported by the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, available for iOS and Android devices. The app includes an 8-band equalizer, custom presets, and an intelligent Sound Personalization engine that adjusts the sound signature to the user’s preference.

Additionally, the app provides access to firmware updates, which Sennheiser plans to use to introduce new features throughout the product’s lifespan.

Design, Build, and Accessories
The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless features an around-ear, circum-aural design with a headband. It weighs around 290 g and can fold flat to dimensions of 180 x 197 x 47 mm. The headphones are available in three color options: Black, White, and Denim.

Charging is done via USB-C at 5V and 800mA maximum. The carry case is said to be 20% smaller than the previous generation. In the box, buyers will receive the headphones, carry case, USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5mm analogue audio cable for wired use with devices like in-flight entertainment systems.

The packaging is environmentally friendly, using paper and cardboard construction without any plastic in either the single-unit box or outer master carton.
