Unveiling the Todoist Hack that Revolutionized My Work-life Balance
Working from home full-time requires clear boundaries between personal and professional life. As the clock strikes 5pm, I shut the door to my home office with the intention of not thinking about work until the next morning.
However, the human brain doesn’t switch off work-related thoughts that easily. It’s unrealistic to expect all work concerns to vanish instantly.
Seeking a healthy work-life balance, I made sure to keep work emails and Slack notifications away from my phone. Yet, I faced a recurring issue – ideas and reminders would pop into my head during my downtime, with no appropriate place to jot them down.

My previous “solution” involved adding work-related thoughts to my personal to-do list, only to transfer them to my work list later. This method caused stress to seep into my free time. Emailing myself was cumbersome, requiring manual copying to the to-do list.
Fortunately, I stumbled upon a free and incredibly useful hack that solved this problem.
The unexpected Todoist hack
Switching to Todoist was a simple decision to declutter my overwhelming Microsoft To Do backlog and opt for a more intuitive platform. Little did I know, it would revolutionize my workflow.
Discovering the power of email forwarding with Todoist was a game-changer. This feature allows converting emails into tasks by forwarding them to a unique Todoist email address. It’s designed for handling emails that require action, but it also accommodates new tasks.
It’s impossible for all work-related thoughts to immediately vaporise like I’m in an episode of Severance
By creating separate email addresses for the main ‘Inbox’ and each active ‘Project’ (up to five allowed on the free tier), you can easily turn email subjects into task names and email bodies into task attachments.
Initially skeptical, I gave it a shot. Within minutes, the task appeared in my Todoist account like magic.

Todoist offers advanced features like scheduling tasks by adding <date…> to the subject line, assigning labels with @, setting priorities with p1, p2, or p3, and assigning collaborators using the +firstname\ lastname format.
My era of to-do list clutter is officially over
Todoist has brought me peace of mind and eliminated my to-do list clutter. It has significantly improved my work-life balance, ensuring that work-related tasks are promptly captured and organized.
Embracing Todoist’s email forwarding feature has transformed my workflow. Now, when inspiration strikes, I can quickly capture it in Todoist and let go of work-related thoughts until I’m back at my desk.
