The Forgotten Flaw: Android 17’s Major Shortcoming
If you’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of Android 17, you’re not alone. The next major version of Google’s mobile OS is just around the corner, with four public betas already available for Pixel 6 owners. The final release is expected as early as June.
While Android 17 is expected to be an incremental update, there are already some exciting features worth noting. These include separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles in quick settings, the option to remove app labels on Pixel devices, and a dedicated slider for the virtual assistant volume.
However, one area that seems to have been overlooked by Google is widgets. First-party widgets on Pixel phones have outdated, cluttered designs that fail to make good use of available space. This is a major drawback for those who appreciate both functionality and aesthetics in their widgets.
Widgets play a crucial role in providing quick access to information on the home screen, but Google’s widgets fall short in terms of design. Despite the large display of devices like the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the widgets can make the home screen feel cluttered and unappealing.
Google’s stock widgets, such as the weather and calendar widgets, offer limited customization options and lack visual appeal. This is in stark contrast to third-party apps like Samsung’s One UI, which offer beautifully designed widgets that enhance the overall user experience.
The lack of attention to widget design in Android 17 is a missed opportunity for Google. While many third-party apps offer better widget options, users who prefer stock Google apps are left with unattractive and limited choices.
Comparatively, Samsung’s One UI demonstrates what’s possible with thoughtful widget design. The widgets on Samsung devices, such as the dual clock widget and the Digital Wellbeing widget, not only look visually appealing but also offer enhanced functionality.
For users like myself who rely on widgets for daily use, the quality of widgets can significantly impact the overall user experience. Google should recognize the importance of well-designed widgets in enhancing the look and feel of their devices.
Unless Google makes significant improvements to its widgets in the final release of Android 17, many users may continue to prefer devices from manufacturers that offer more visually appealing and functional widgets, such as Samsung.
