Keeping Google Gemini Out of My Inbox
In 2023, the mainstream saw a surge in artificial intelligence with the introduction of ChatGPT. Fast forward three years, and AI has become ubiquitous.
As an Android user reliant on Google apps, the infiltration of Gemini AI into my everyday apps is undeniable. What started as an AI chatbot and search summaries has now permeated all my favorite Google apps.
From Maps to Photos, Calendar to Chrome, Keep to Docs, and YouTube, AI has taken over every aspect of my digital life, whether I asked for it or not.
At Google’s I/O developer conference on May 19, the message was clear: this is just the beginning.
…the march of AI into my emails fills me with dread
One of the most ambitious plans Google has in store is the integration of Gemini into Gmail, the email service I’ve relied on for nearly two decades. The prospect of Gemini transforming the way I interact with my emails is unsettling.
My emails contain a trove of personal data, from official communications to online purchase records, making Gmail a repository of information that I hold dear. The thought of AI having unrestricted access to this data for the sake of personalized experiences is concerning.
To utilize Gmail’s “smart features,” users must consent to Google using their Workspace content and activity to tailor their experience across the platform. This means granting Google access to emails for a more customized AI experience, a trade-off I’m not willing to make.
My emails are sacred
While Google has been scanning emails for spam since Gmail’s inception, the idea of AI parsing through my emails for targeted advertising is worrisome. The need to opt out of these features in the settings raises questions about privacy and data security.
I simply don’t trust Google to surface all the key information and ensure that it’s accurately summarised
Gemini’s AI Inbox feature in Gmail aims to prioritize emails and provide relevant summaries, but the challenge lies in accurately interpreting the nuances of human communication present in emails. Trusting AI to curate important information without missing crucial details is a leap of faith I’m not ready to take.
Gemini (still) can’t be trusted
Gemini Live, a new feature in Gmail, allows real-time AI-assisted conversations to manage emails efficiently. While the concept is intriguing, the reliance on AI to comprehend and summarize email content accurately raises doubts about its effectiveness.
…for Gemini Live to be remotely useful, Google will have to analyse all our emails in far greater detail than we’ve ever seen before
The expansion of AI Overviews to Gmail’s search functionality poses a significant risk, as inaccuracies in information could have serious repercussions in critical situations like real estate transactions or visa applications.
Why on earth would I hand over the reins to an AI assistant that Google acknowledges can make mistakes?
Research that’s no better than pub chat
AI-generated responses in Gmail, such as “Help Me Write” and “Suggested Replies,” aim to streamline email management but may sacrifice personalization and accuracy. The risk of sounding robotic and making errors outweighs the convenience these tools offer.
If you’re trying to inject a bit of personality into your emails, AI is the last thing you need
How to become a terrible emailer 101
While AI can revolutionize various industries, its implementation in Gmail raises concerns about privacy, accuracy, and user experience. As long as Gemini remains optional in Gmail, I will opt out to maintain control over my emails.
AI can be great, but not like this
The potential of Gemini in Gmail is promising, but the risks associated with AI integration into personal emails are too significant. Until there is assurance of accuracy and privacy, I will remain cautious about embracing AI in my email management.
