Hussein Al-Attar the designer of the F87 BMW M2

Hussein Al Attar is leaving BMW Group and Designworks after 14 years to become Design Director at General Motors’ Advanced Design Studio in Pasadena, California. He led the exterior design of several landmark BMW models, such as the F87 M2 Coupe, the 6 Series Gran Turismo, the X6, and the BMW M Hybrid V8 Le Mans race car. Al Attar will now have the opportunity to shape the future vehicles of GM at their California studio, which focuses on advanced and concept design. His move to GM signifies a shift towards a forward-looking role in a creative environment. As a passionate sneaker enthusiast, I can confidently say that the shoes in question were truly exceptional. But what does this mean for General Motors (GM)? To be honest, I’m not entirely sure, but the man himself, Hussein, can surely provide a better explanation. In his own words, “I am thrilled to be joining General Motors, a company with a rich design legacy, a culture of innovation, and a future that I am proud to contribute to, alongside a talented team whose work I have always admired.”

Before his time at BMW, Hussein gained experience through internships at prestigious automotive companies such as Mercedes-AMG, Audi, and Daimler. He even contributed to the creation of the Smart eBike Concept, which made its debut in Paris and later influenced the production model. Hussein is known for his ability to navigate the diverse realms of design, from aggressive performance-focused aesthetics to refined sophistication and even forward-thinking electric mobility. GM is gaining a true visionary who has excelled in all aspects of automotive design.

On a personal note, I have had the privilege of knowing Hussein for quite some time, having initially connected on a car forum. Over the years, I have witnessed his design philosophy evolve from the M2 to the 6 Series GT, showcasing his versatility and growth as a designer. His influence is evident in BMW’s design language of the past decade, both overtly and subtly. I have no doubt that whatever projects emerge from GM’s Advanced Design Studio under Hussein’s leadership will leave a lasting impact, much like his past work.

Congratulations, Hussein, on this well-deserved opportunity. Your dedication to the craft of design is truly inspiring, and I am grateful for the valuable lessons you have imparted to me over the years, even when our opinions on certain cars differed. Your journey as a designer continues to unfold, and I am excited to see where it takes you next.
