Expanding AI Procurement: The US Government’s Shift in Anthropic Partnerships
The United States administration has recently expanded its list of preferred AI suppliers by adding four new companies to its roster. The Pentagon has signed agreements with Microsoft, Reflection AI, Amazon, and Nvidia, allowing their products to be used on classified operations. These companies now join OpenAI, xAI, and Google as approved suppliers for the Department of Defense for any lawful use.
A significant point of contention arose between Anthropic AI and the US government surrounding the phrase “any lawful use.” Anthropic’s CEO, Darius Amodei, raised concerns about potential government surveillance and autonomous weapon production using Anthropic technology. As a result, the Pentagon terminated a $200 million contract with Anthropic, leading the company to pursue legal action against the government. The Trump administration labeled Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” and referred to the company as a “woke” entity.
In response to the new agreements, the Pentagon emphasized the importance of preventing AI vendor lock-in and ensuring flexibility for the Joint force. The technologies provided by the approved suppliers will be utilized for Impact Levels six and seven, involving secret and highly classified data. This initiative aims to establish an “AI-first fighting force” to enhance national security and empower warfighters with advanced tools.
While the Pentagon currently utilizes generative AI for non-classified tasks within defense departments, the new suppliers will aid in streamlining data synthesis, enhancing situational understanding, and improving decision-making in complex operational environments. The expansion of AI suppliers within the military and security forces aims to reduce dependency on individual vendors and minimize disruptions caused by personal preferences of company leaders.
Anthropic’s AI models have been utilized in various classified settings, including with Palantir’s Maven toolset. The company’s Mythos model is reportedly being assessed by numerous organizations globally, with notable users including the UK’s MI5 and the US NSA. Despite previous conflicts, there are indications that the US administration may reconsider its stance on Anthropic and seek to re-engage with the company.
In alignment with its commitment to national security, the US government remains actively engaged with frontier AI labs and industry stakeholders to protect the country and its citizens. The administration continues to explore innovative AI solutions while collaborating with industry leaders to advance technological capabilities.
