Article Summary
- Car paparazzi recently spotted a fully camouflaged 2028 BMW M5 Touring G99 undergoing testing at the Nürburgring.
- The updated performance wagon is set to launch next year, along with the 5 Series LCI.
- Changes to the engine and exhaust have been hinted at as the prototype emits a noticeably more aggressive sound.
The automotive industry is in constant motion, with the 2028 BMW M5 Touring G99 already making appearances at the Nürburgring. BMW’s goal is to align the G90 with the Neue Klasse aesthetic and technology. While the sedan has been a frequent subject for car paparazzi, the wagon is now also capturing attention.
Despite the full camouflage on the prototype’s body, it is evident that the G99 will not feature a completely new design but rather a significant mid-cycle facelift. The sleek camouflage masks some details, but it is clear that the fast wagon will sport a revamped front fascia. The incorporation of Neue Klasse elements, similar to the 2027 7 Series, indicates a modernized look, with redesigned headlights surrounding a potentially smaller kidney grille.
The front bumper appears more aggressive than before, with potential enhancements such as new wheel designs and body colors expected. The 2028 M5 remains a plug-in hybrid, as indicated by the charging port cover on the driver-side front fender.
Redesigned Taillights
The updated taillights, partially visible through the camouflage, suggest a departure from the current G99’s design. The rear light configuration appears to draw inspiration from the new i3 sedan, with the quad exhaust setup maintaining its signature look. Only M Performance and full-fledged M models will feature visible exhausts with four tips protruding through the bumper.
The prototype emits a more aggressive sound than the current M5, hinting at potential tweaks to the S68 engine for enhanced auditory experience. Alternatively, the absence of a gasoline particulate filter on the test car may explain the heightened engine noise, especially after a recent power reduction to comply with Euro 7 regulations.
The facelifted M5 will showcase a revamped dashboard in addition to possible changes to the combustion engine or exhaust. Aligning with the latest technology trends, BMW’s latest infotainment setup will replace the rotary controller, with a pillar-to-pillar windshield projection becoming standard. The potential introduction of a passenger screen, similar to the 7 Series facelift, remains uncertain for the 5 Series and M5 models.
The M5 LCI is expected to debut next year, coinciding with or shortly after the regular 5 Series facelift, offering a blend of performance and technological advancements.
