Age of Empires II Definitive Edition

Microsoft’s iconic real-time strategy game, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, has made a surprising comeback to the Mac platform. This new native macOS app is optimized for modern Apple silicon Macs, bringing back a classic favorite to Mac users.

Although Age of Empires II is not a new title, having been released for Windows in 1999 and later for Mac in 2001, it holds a special place in gaming history. It was the second installment in the franchise that played a significant role in bringing the Mac back into the gaming spotlight.

Following its release for Windows in October 1997, the original Age of Empires was highlighted by Apple’s CEO at the time, Steve Jobs, during Macworld 1999. Jobs emphasized Apple’s commitment to gaming by announcing that popular titles like Quake, StarCraft, Tomb Raider III, and Age of Empires would all be coming to the Mac within 120 days. This pledge showcased Apple’s dedication to becoming a premier gaming platform.

Age of Empires for Mac was eventually released by July 1999, thanks to the efforts of MacSoft Games, a studio known for bringing PC games to the Mac platform. However, the original game did not make the transition to Mac OS X, as it was only playable in the Classic Environment.

With the arrival of Mac OS X Cheetah in 2001, Age of Empires II was ported to the Mac, offering Mac users a chance to enjoy the game natively. Despite being a beloved sequel, it was eventually overshadowed by Age of Empires III, which had native OS X support. Both Age of Empires and Age of Empires II faced challenges with Apple’s OS and silicon transitions, leading to their eventual obsolescence on newer Mac systems.

The release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Mac marks a significant moment for fans who have been unable to play the game natively for nearly two decades. The remastered version boasts 4K visuals, a revamped soundtrack, and includes three expansions: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition comes complete with razor-sharp 4K visuals, a fully remastered soundtrack, and includes three expansions with the base game: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes. Newcomers to the series and returning veterans alike can look forward to all the fast-paced base-building and warfare that made this game a classic, given new life over two decades of refinement and additional content.

In addition to the base game, players can access a variety of downloadable content (DLC) at launch. The “Definitive Edition” priced at $34.99 includes expansions like Dawn of the Dukes, Dynasties of India, and Lords of the West. For a more comprehensive experience, the “Ultimate Bundle” at $146.89 offers additional content such as Return of Rome, The Mountain Royals, Victors and Vanquished, and The Three Kingdoms.

While Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is currently available on Steam, a Mac App Store release is planned for later this year, expanding the game’s reach to more Mac users.
