BMW Speedtop: Unveiling the Production-Ready Luxury Wagon

  • BMW has revealed the production-ready design of its Speedtop prototypes by removing most of the disguise.
  • The two-door wagon, based on the M8, still conceals the color gradient on the roof.
  • The 70 cars BMW plans to build for customers will closely resemble the concept introduced a year ago.

Recent spy photos taken near the Nürburgring showcase a near-production prototype of the BMW Speedtop, challenging the notion that BMW can’t build beautiful cars anymore. The luxury wagon, technically a shooting brake due to its two doors, impresses from every angle.

Most of the camouflage has been removed, leaving only the roof covered to conceal the color gradient, a unique feature seen on the concept car unveiled previously. The transition from Floating Sunstone Maroon to Floating Sundown Silver on the roof is expected to carry over to the limited run of 70 cars earmarked for affluent customers.

Priced at a rumored €500,000, the Speedtop exceeds the cost of an M5 Touring by threefold in Germany. It is based on the now unavailable M8 model, deviating from the plug-in hybrid setup of the G99 by utilizing the “S63” engine without an electric motor.

The Production-Spec Speedtop Will Mirror The 2025 Concept

Prototype testing indicates that production has yet to commence, with BMW currently focused on building the even rarer M8-based Skytop limited to 50 units. The Speedtop, sharing a similar design, features a manually removable targa roof like the Skytop.

The prototype closely resembles the concept, with minor modifications like bumper holes for parking sensors. The exquisite shooting brake retains its stunning appearance, with subtle changes such as a low-mounted reverse light. The absence of a rear wiper underscores the emphasis on aesthetics for this model.

Retaining design elements from the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este show car, the production-ready Speedtop showcases oval exhaust finishers and distinctive winglet-style door handles. The elegant lamella wheels seen on the test car may be replaced by two-tone, 14-spoke wheels from the concept. Interior details, such as the reupholstered cabin in Sundown Maroon and Moonstone White, promise a luxurious experience.

While no dedicated reveal is expected for the Speedtop, one of the 70 units may make an appearance at BMW Welt before delivery. Stay tuned for more updates.
