Focusing on Fallout: The Fallout of Obsidian’s Layoffs
Xbox Layoffs: A Deep Dive into the Recent Mass Cuts and Studio Changes
Microsoft’s Xbox division made headlines on July 6th with the announcement of significant layoffs affecting around 1600 employees and the decision to part ways with five studios. Among the consequences of these mass cuts is a renewed focus on developing Xbox’s most profitable franchises, such as Fallout. However, even studios like Obsidian, known for their work on Fallout spin-offs, have not been spared from the layoffs, with reports indicating that around a quarter of their staff have been let go.
Kotaku reports that approximately 60-70 employees at Obsidian have already been affected by the layoffs, with more expected to follow in a second round later this year. This restructuring is part of Microsoft’s plan to cut a total of 3200 staff members over the next financial year.
The scale of these layoffs has left remaining developers at Obsidian uncertain about the future of the numerous projects currently in development at the studio. While work on projects like Grounded 2 and The Outer Worlds 2’s DLC is expected to continue, a studio-wide meeting scheduled for July 7th aims to provide clarity on the way forward.
Notable figures among those let go by Microsoft include art director Daniel Alpert, a veteran of 21 years at the studio. In a statement on LinkedIn, Alpert acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry and expressed uncertainty about what lies ahead for those affected by the layoffs.
Other long-time employees let go include animation lead Shon Stewart, senior narrative designer Jay Turner, senior producer Olivia Burkhart, systems designer Dennis Huynh, narrative designer A.K. Fedeau, area designer Tyler McCombs, and several others. The impact of these layoffs extends beyond just numbers, as it raises questions about the future direction of the studio and its projects.
The recent events at Obsidian highlight the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry, where even established studios are not immune to drastic changes. The layoffs serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by developers in an ever-evolving landscape.
Our thoughts are with the affected employees at Obsidian and those who continue to navigate the shifting dynamics within the studio. Solidarity and best wishes to all those impacted by these developments.
