Revolutionizing High Performance Computing: EuroHPC’s INNOVATE Supercomputer Tender
Introducing the EuroHPC JU INNOVATE Supercomputer for Industrial Applications
The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has recently announced a call for tender to acquire the INNOVATE supercomputer, marking a significant milestone as the first EuroHPC system tailored exclusively for industrial use.
This cutting-edge platform is set to be stationed in Italy, with the primary objective of granting European businesses secure access to advanced high-performance computing resources.
Located at the DAMA Tecnopolo in Bologna and managed by CINECA, the INNOVATE supercomputer is poised to provide industry-specific computing infrastructure to meet the unique demands of businesses.
Designed to accommodate demanding AI, simulation, and data-intensive tasks, the system places a strong emphasis on security, confidentiality, and operational flexibility.
Upon its operational deployment, the INNOVATE supercomputer is anticipated to enhance Europe’s industrial competitiveness by empowering companies to accelerate innovation, enhance digital capabilities, and address complex computational challenges across various sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, climate modeling, and logistics.
Revolutionizing Industrial Computing with the First EuroHPC System
Unlike previous EuroHPC systems primarily focused on scientific research, the INNOVATE supercomputer has been purposefully crafted to meet the specific requirements of the industrial landscape.
By integrating dedicated CPU and GPU resources within a flexible architecture, the platform can support a wide array of applications including AI training, scientific visualization, large-scale simulations, and emerging digital services.
This innovative approach aims to provide organizations with adaptable computing resources capable of handling diverse commercial and industrial workloads while upholding stringent data protection and integrity standards.
The procurement process is currently underway, as EuroHPC JU seeks a qualified supplier responsible for the acquisition, delivery, installation, and long-term maintenance of the new system.
Empowering Industrial Advancements with AI and Digital Innovation
The INNOVATE supercomputer is poised to drive a diverse range of advanced applications crucial for European industries.
Anticipated use cases encompass digital twins, fine-tuning and deployment of large language models, big data analytics, robotics, advanced manufacturing, personalized healthcare, climate and weather modeling, supply chain optimization, and virtual prototyping.
By offering dedicated industrial computing infrastructure, the system aims to lower barriers to adopting advanced AI and simulation technologies, facilitating more efficient development of new digital products and services by companies.
Collaborative Efforts of the INNOVATE Consortium in Italy
Coordinated by CINECA, the INNOVATE project is executed through a consortium comprising prominent organizations from Italy’s research and industrial sectors.
Key consortium members include Almawave, Autostrade per l’Italia, BI-REX, Fondazione ICSC, Fondazione IFAB, SNAM, and Unipol Assicurazioni. CINECA acts as the hosting entity, while Fondazione ICSC represents the private-sector partners engaged in the initiative.
EU and Industry Funding Support for the INNOVATE Project
With a total budget of €11.6 million, the INNOVATE project receives €4.07 million from the European Union through the Digital Europe Programme, with the remaining funding contributed by industrial partners in the consortium.
Organizations interested in supplying the INNOVATE supercomputer have until 8 September 2026 at 17:00 CET to submit their tenders.
Once operational, the system is poised to become an integral component of Europe’s high-performance computing infrastructure, offering businesses secure access to advanced computing resources supporting AI, digital transformation, and next-generation industrial innovation.
