I would defend diversity with all my might: The Sims artist’s battle against mandated homogeneity post-EA Saudi acquisition
EA Buyout: The Sims Team’s Commitment to Diversity
Amid concerns about potential changes following the Saudi Arabian-backed buyout of EA, senior character artist Jess Hyland reassures The Sims community that she remains dedicated to maintaining diversity within the game. Addressing speculations of pressure to reduce support for inclusivity, Hyland vehemently states that she has not received any such directives and would vehemently oppose them if they were to arise.
Last September, EA disclosed that a consortium, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, had made a buyout offer totaling $56 billion, with $20 billion of debt to be shouldered by EA and its subsidiaries. While the acquisition is pending approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, concerns have surfaced regarding potential layoffs and changes in the company’s culture.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the acquisition, Hyland remains steadfast in her belief that The Sims’ commitment to diversity will endure. She refutes the notion that external influences could diminish the game’s inclusivity, citing the team’s autonomy in decision-making.
Former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah has expressed concerns about potential cultural shifts within EA, particularly impacting studios like Bioware. The implications of the buyout extend to The Sims as well, a game known for its embrace of diverse player demographics.

Since its inception, The Sims has been a platform for players to create characters of various backgrounds, genders, and abilities. Following the buyout announcement, concerns arose among players and creators about potential changes to the game’s inclusive nature. However, EA has reassured the community of its unwavering commitment to providing a space for diverse expressions.
During a recent discussion, Hyland emphasized her dedication to upholding The Sims’ values of inclusivity. She remains optimistic about the team’s ability to resist any external pressures that may compromise the game’s diverse representation.

The Sims’ journey towards inclusivity has been a collaborative effort, with Maxis continuously expanding character customization options. Hyland highlighted the team’s proactive approach to accommodating diverse player preferences, including efforts to challenge traditional norms within the game.
While uncertainties loom over EA’s future post-acquisition, The Sims team remains resolute in their mission to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all players. As Hyland aptly puts it, the game’s values are deeply ingrained in the team’s collective vision, ensuring that diversity and representation will continue to be at the forefront of The Sims’ development.
