AI-Powered Eye Cancer Detection: Eyedentity’s €1.3 Million Funding Boost
Eyedentity, a MedTech startup, has successfully completed its first investment round, raising €1.3 million (SEK 15 million) to support regulatory approval, enhance product development, and expand its AI-powered diagnostics platform into opticians, eye clinics, and hospitals.
The investment round was oversubscribed and led by Norrsken Launcher, with participation from the Karolinska Institutet Innovation and a group of angel investors. Gustav Stålhammar, co-founder and CSO of Eyedentity, expressed excitement about the potential impact of their technology in the healthcare industry.
In 2026, there has been significant funding in European AI-enabled diagnostics and MedTech. Notable rounds include investments in companies such as ScreenPoint Medical, Moonlight AI, TidalSense, neuroClues, and ShanX Medtech. These investments demonstrate a growing interest in medical imaging, early disease detection, and clinical diagnostics.
Eyedentity, founded in 2025, specializes in AI technology for detecting serious eye diseases from fundus images obtained during routine eye examinations. The company’s founders, including Gustav Stålhammar and Mats Holmström, bring a unique combination of expertise in ophthalmology and machine learning to the table.
Their initial focus is on uveal melanoma, a rare but potentially deadly form of eye cancer. By leveraging existing infrastructure at opticians, Eyedentity aims to improve the triage process for patients with suspicious eye conditions, reducing unnecessary referrals and providing decision support for specialists.
The company’s partnership with the Karolinska Institutet Innovation Incubator has been instrumental in their growth and development. Mats Holmström highlighted the support they have received and the opportunities for collaboration within the incubator.
Eyedentity’s approach is designed to seamlessly integrate with existing optician practices, reducing the need for additional equipment or screening processes. Their technology aims to improve patient outcomes by reducing false-positive referrals and streamlining the referral process for specialists.
Currently, Eyedentity is conducting a live pilot with Synologen, a network of independent opticians in Sweden. The company plans to expand its commercial reach across the Nordics, Europe, and the US, with a focus on regulatory approval, product development, and team expansion.
Beyond uveal melanoma, Eyedentity has plans to apply its AI platform to other eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Their long-term goal is to create a comprehensive AI diagnostics platform for various eye conditions, revolutionizing the way opticians, eye clinics, and hospitals diagnose and treat patients.
Overall, Eyedentity’s innovative approach to AI-powered diagnostics in the field of ophthalmology shows promise for improving patient care and outcomes. With continued support and investment, the company is poised for success in the evolving landscape of MedTech. Transform the following:
