Flipkart’s Ascension: Walmart’s Rapid Rise in India’s Quick-Commerce Market
A Shift in the Indian Quick Commerce Landscape
Indian startups have revolutionized the way consumers shop for groceries and everyday essentials by offering quick delivery services. With Walmart-owned Flipkart now making significant strides in the quick-commerce space, the competition is heating up as global rival Amazon also enters the instant delivery market.
Flipkart Minutes, launched in August 2024 as Flipkart’s quick-commerce venture, has seen a rapid increase in daily orders, now averaging between 1.1 million to 1.2 million orders per day. This growth brings Flipkart Minutes closer to Swiggy’s Instamart, which handles around 1.4 million orders daily.
Despite being a newcomer compared to established players like Instamart, Blinkit, and Zepto, Flipkart is quickly closing the gap with its competitors. Blinkit currently leads the market with 3.4 million to 3.6 million daily orders, followed by Zepto at 2.4 million to 2.6 million. Flipkart is steadily gaining ground, especially against Instamart, which has been the smallest player in terms of order volume.
While Instamart boasts significant scale with over 14 million monthly transacting users and 1,200 dark stores across 130 cities, Flipkart’s aggressive expansion of its delivery infrastructure is driving its growth. The company has significantly increased its network of micro-fulfillment centers, aiming to reach 1,500 by the end of 2026.
One of Flipkart’s key advantages is its existing pool of e-commerce customers, providing Minutes with a ready audience for faster deliveries. With a focus on expanding its delivery network and improving service quality, Flipkart is making a strong push in the quick-commerce space.
The Success of Flipkart Minutes
Flipkart Minutes has not only expanded its customer base but has also seen a rise in customer retention and spending. Repeat buyers account for 65% to 70% of monthly purchases on the platform, with a 50% to 60% increase in transactions per customer compared to the previous year.
On average, customers are spending around ₹400 to ₹500 per order, with a growing demand for categories like fruits, vegetables, staples, dairy, and meat. Flipkart is also diversifying its product range to include gourmet items, catering to a wider range of customer preferences.
Despite its growth, Flipkart Minutes has managed to reduce its average delivery time to about 11 minutes, showcasing its commitment to efficient service and customer satisfaction.
A Competitive Landscape in Indian E-Commerce
As quick commerce becomes a significant player in India’s online shopping landscape, both Flipkart and Amazon are vying for a larger market share. Amazon has been expanding its quick-commerce service, Amazon Now, to compete with Flipkart Minutes in delivering instant orders to customers.
During Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s visit to India, the company highlighted the rapid growth of Amazon Now, with plans to expand to over 300 cities and establish a network of micro-fulfillment centers. The competition between Flipkart and Amazon in the quick-commerce space reflects the growing demand for instant delivery services among Indian consumers.
Quick commerce is not only a strategic move for Flipkart and Amazon but also a defensive measure to retain customers who have grown accustomed to immediate deliveries. As specialist quick-commerce platforms gain traction, e-commerce giants must adapt to meet consumer expectations for fast and efficient service.
With the evolution of quick commerce in India, scheduled delivery services may become a thing of the past as consumers prioritize convenience and speed in their shopping experience.
