The Ultimate European Thermostat: Tado’s Answer to Nest
Tado Smart Thermostat X: The Next Generation in Home Heating
The recent announcement of Google shutting down servers for its 1st and 2nd generation thermostats has led to a surge in sales for Tado, according to Christian Deilmann, the cofounder and managing director of Tado. In an interview with The Verge, Deilmann mentioned that the third-generation Nest thermostat has seen a tenfold increase in penetration in Europe. Despite Google’s continued support for the third-generation Nest, Deilmann anticipates a shift in strategy in the future, questioning the sustainability of supporting certain generations over others.
Tado’s latest offering, the Smart Thermostat X, is priced at £159.99/€179.99 for the wired starter kit and £169.99/€199.99 for the wireless kit. Boasting a sleek white square design with a circular interface that only appears upon touch, the new thermostat is a significant departure from its predecessors.
Measuring at just 17.8mm thick, the Smart Thermostat X is notably slimmer than the first-generation Tado and the third-generation Nest. Deilmann emphasized the device’s integration into home aesthetics, featuring a customizable action button on top and a rechargeable battery that lasts up to a year.
Designed to be compatible with boilers, heat pumps, and underfloor heating systems, the Smart Thermostat X utilizes Matter-over-Thread connectivity for seamless communication with home heating systems. Tado’s transition to Thread from a proprietary 6LoWPAN technology with the first-generation Tado X has further enhanced its connectivity capabilities.
In addition to the hardware improvements, Tado is introducing new features across its product line with the launch of the second-generation model. Customers can now manage multiple thermostats across different homes under a single account and benefit from Tado’s TÜV certified hydronic balancing system, eligible for government heat-pump subsidies in select markets.
For enhanced energy efficiency, Tado offers AI Assist for £3.99 a month (£29.99 a year), which optimizes heating based on weather conditions and home characteristics. Features include automatic geofencing, open-window detection, adaptive heating, and preheating before arrival, ensuring maximum comfort and cost savings for users.
Tado stands behind the energy-saving capabilities of its products with a unique promise. Customers who do not experience sufficient energy cost savings within the first 12 months of use can return their products for a full refund, reflecting Tado’s confidence in the value and efficiency of its offerings.
The Tado Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) is now available for purchase on tado.com and select European retailers, marking a new era in smart home heating solutions.
